A 59-year-old Ormond Beach woman was critically injured Monday in a car accident on I-95. Bonnie White was northbound when a sport utility vehicle driven by Tara La Munyon, 29, lost control and crossed into her lane from the southbound lane. White was unable to avoid Munyon’s car. White was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center. Munyon suffered minor injuries.

A fatal accident occurred Saturday night when a pedestrian was struck by a mini-van in Daytona Beach Shores. The identity of the victim has not been released but reports state he was in his mid-50s. The man was crossing A1A when a mini-van, driven by Jodi Ascherman, struck him just north of Simpson Avenue. The victim died on the way to the hospital. The crash is under investigation.
Five people were hospitalized following a three-vehicle crash in DeLand on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 22.
Seventeen-year-old Rodrigo Duarte of DeLand was traveling west on Euclid Avenue when he ran the stop sign at Hill Avenue. Duarte’s 2002 GMC truck hit a 2006 Toyota driven by Gina Martinez of DeLeon Springs. Duarte's truck continued through the intersection, slamming head-on into an eastbound 2005 Pontiac that was stopped at the stop sign on Euclid.
Duarte, Martinez, Martinez's passenger, Christina Hernandez of DeLeon Springs, and a Canadian couple in the Pontiac, Glandon and Frances Thomas, were taken to area hospitals. Three were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
Frances Thomas was listed in satisfactory condition at Halifax Health, and Christina Hernandez was treated for injuries at Florida Hospital-DeLand and released. Hospital officials said the other three crash victims have either been discharged or they may still be unidentified in hospital records because medical workers haven't been able to confirm their identities.
Duarte, who had no driver license, was under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred. Charges are pending the results of that investigation and blood-alcohol tests.
Volusia County, FL -- Officials identified a hit-and-run driver who fled the scene of an accident between a trooper and a Palm Coast family On Thursday, November 18, but he has not been apprehended. The suspect’s name has not been released because the case is still under investigation, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson said.
Trooper Andrew Barrett was attempting to stop the suspect’s car on LPGA Boulevard when he lost control of his patrol car. It slid into the path of a vehicle driven by Belisa Norton, of Palm Coast, who had her three children with her. The vehicles collided at Jimmy Ann Drive, injuring all the occupants.
Barrett, Norton and two of her three children were treated and released from Halifax Health Medical Center. Hope Norton, 5, remained hospitalized in good condition.

HOLLY HILL -- Ann Margaret Denease Layton, of Ashford Ala., is slowly recovering from the Oct. 24th wreck at the intersection of Clyde Morris Boulevard and Strickland Range Road. Layton’s vehicle was struck by a sport utility vehicle driven by Lewis Hastings of Ormond Beach. The crash killed Layton's mother, Denease Layton, of Ashford, and her great aunt, Drumm, of Holly Hill. An investigation concluded that driver Denease Layton was at fault. She ran through a red blinking light at the intersection.

A Putnam County man died after a colliding with a semi-truck tractor on U.S. 17 in Crescent City. Carlos Otero was driving a pickup truck, Chevrolet S-1, when he collided with Jerry W. Lee. Otero hit a utility pole at an intersection. He was pronounced dead at Putnam Community Medical Center. Lee sustained minor injuries.
A nursing home in DeLand is under investigation for elderly abuse. Ridgecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has been accused of neglecting to treat a patient’s injuries for almost 12 hours. The 76-year-old patient fell out of bed last week around 5 a.m. while her bed was being changed. The fall broke both of her legs and her shoulder. Almost 12 hours later, when the next shift came, the patient finally received medical attention. She was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. The nursing home has also been accused of violations in previous state inspections.
Authorities are investigating the death of a 65-year-old Deltona woman. Christina White was taken home after a routine facelift and was on heavy medication. Her boyfriend went to check on her hours later and found her dead. The surgery has been ruled out as a cause of death. Further investigation is needed.
A recall has been issued for certain child car seats that pose a danger to child passengers. There have been 77 reports that the handle used when carrying the child has come off, either completely or partially. The recalling company is Dorel Juvenile Group Inc. The malfunction has resulted in injuries to at least three children. Authorities say the seat is still safe to use only as a car seat, not to carry the child.

Two children were injured Monday afternoon while riding home from Hutchison Beach Elementary School. The bus the children were in was struck by a tractor-trailer in Panama City Beach, FL. There were 24 children in the bus at the time of the accident. The two injured students were taken to the hospital. Their injuries were not life-threatening.
A 44-year-old man was arrested this week for the rape of a 12-year-old girl. The incident occurred just west of DeLand. The girl was walking in the neighborhood when Antonio Hernandez asked her to come inside to get something he had for her. He then raped her and gave the injured child $20 not to tell anyone. Hernandez confessed to the crime after his arrest. He was taken to Volusia County Branch Jail.

Stanton Wesson, of stark was arrested Tuesday and taken to the Bradford County jail. The man was charged with aggravated child abuse after an 8-month-old boy suffered head injuries. Wesson told rescue workers he had slipped and fallen while holding the baby. The hospital evaluation found this to be inconsisten with the head injuries. Other bruises and marks were also discovered and were in different stages of the healing process.
