Merthie is currently in a state mental hospital for violent sex offenders. Victims have included both boys and girls, even as young as 4-years-old. Mental health experts agree he's a different person but are not in agreement on if he should be released.
Jean E. Dorvil, 56, a teacher at Head Start preschool in Miami, FL, has been charged with kicking a 5-year-old girl in the face. He has also been charged with hitting two other children in his care. The child, Mikel Blue, said Dorvil kicked her on April 16 after using the restroom without permission. Dorvil was charged Friday with aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm, three charges of battery and two charges of child abuse with no harm. He is in jail without bond.
An autisic student in Sanford will recieve $500,000 from the Seminole County School Board and its insurers to settle a lawsuit claiming the board was negligent. Kathleen Garrett, a former teacher, of the student was convicted of pinning the 60 pound boy down unitl he turned blue. Garrett was also arrested in October 2004 after allegations she had abused several students in her classes at South Seminole Middle School in Casselberry.
