A study conducted at 49 medical centers in 6 countries over the past 5 years shows those with diabetes and heart disease may have another option other than surgery.

The patients in the study included 2,368 people with type 2 diabetes and stable coronary artery disease.  Researchers wanted to find the best way to reduce heart attacks, strokes and death in these patients. 

Bypass surgery was compared to an unnamed drug treatment. The results showed the drug therapy could work if taken correctly.   Although those given the surgery did have fewer heart attacks and strokes, researchers believe the drugs are still viable options for patients and are also less intrusive.
