Why they mean it when when they say "vital signs."

Nurses in hospitals and nursing homes are supposed to keep track of your vital signs frequently.  We have just posted an answer to a frequently asked question describing why it is so important to your survival that the nurses are careful about keeping track of your vital signs.  This includes heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure and respiratory rate (the number of times you take a breath in a minute).  If these vital signs become abnormal you could need immediate, intensive care in a hospital.  For more information see the entry in our FAQ section.
