I Have Been In a Car Accident and Need Neck Surgery, What Is an Anterior Cervical Diskectomy?

A: If you have a disk herniation that is putting pressure on nerve roots or your spinal cord or if you have bone spurs or osteophytes placing pressure on the roots of the spinal cord you may need neck surgery.  There are many different types of neck surgeries.  Anterior cervical diskectomy is an operation that relieves the pressure placed on the nerve roots or spinal cord by the herniated disk or bone spurs.  The purpose for the surgery is to remove damaged disk material and/or a portion of the bone to relieve compression and give additional space.  The operation is performed while you are lying on your back. A small incision made into one side of the front of the neck.  The disk material and portions of the bone are removed allowing for the decompression and the surgeon will close the incision.
