I Have Been In a Car Accident, Have Neck Pain and May Need Surgery, What is an Anterior Cervical Diskectomy With Fusion?

A: For a discussion on the anterior cervical diskectomy please click here.  The anterior cervical diskectomy removes the disk between the vertebrae in the neck and sometimes a bony structure or osteophytes that cause compression on nerve roots or spinal cord to alleviate compression.  Depending on the severity of the injury, sometimes the diskectomy is accompanied with a fusion of the vertebrae.  The fusion is done for maintaining stability in the area.  Sometimes, a metal plate is also used in conjunction to stabilize the spine while it heals.  Neck surgery is a very serious treatment option that should only be considered after consulting with highly trained surgeons and after undergoing conservative treatment.  However, in some cases neck surgery is the only way to alleviate the pain symptoms suffered from an injury caused by a negligent automobile driver.
