My child has a brain injury. Is there any test that will tell me if the brain injury occurred during birth?

A: First of all, please accept our deepest sympathy. There is no such thing as a minor brain injury - especially when it is your child. By examining the levels of your child's umbilical cord blood gas, doctors can learn important information about the amount of oxygen your baby was receiving during the birthing process. Lack of oxygen to a baby's brain is a significant cause of brain injury during birth. When a baby does not receive enough oxygen during a prolonged period of time during birth, a condition called metabolic acidosis commonly occurs. This condition can be diagnosed from testing your baby's umbilical cord blood gas. The results will indicate how long your child went with low or no oxygen during birth.
