A recent United States News and World report ranking of nursing homes discusses the importance of nurse home staffing. If you or someone you love is in a nursing home and the facility is severely under staffed, the likelihood of your being ignored when you have a serious health crisis goes way up.
Nurses and aides at Florida nursing homes have extremely busy schedules. Certified nursing assistants for example, have to assist patients with hand feeding, bathing, dressing, attend to toileting needs, change diapers, escort patients to the dining room and stand by to help patients in and out of bed and walk. These are just some of their responsibilities.
The problem, of course, is that nursing aides do not have just one patient. When their case load is too big, patient care suffers, sometimes with drastic effects.
If patients are ignored they can actually die unnecessarily. For example, a patient who has a C-diff (Clostridium difficile) infection will likely have repeated bouts of diarrhea. This can cause very serious dehydration and if the dehydration gets bad enough, the patient may need to be transferred to a hospital emergency room. Of course, if a nursing aide is busy with someone else, the chances of recognizing the symptoms of dehydration go down.
Unfortunately, some of our clients in the New Smyrna Beach area have seen this type of neglect. Because they were ignored their loved ones have actually died of dehydration from C-diff.
