Police Investigate Ridgecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
The News-Journal in Daytona Beach has reported that the police have been investigating an incident at Ridgecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Deland, Florida. The investigation is for elderly abuse following an incident where a patient fell out of her bed and broke a shoulder and both legs. Inexplicably, the nursing home staff are accused of not taking care of her injuries until the next shift came on line. She was eventually taken to Halifax Hospital, but certainly must have experienced a substantial amount of unnecessary pain.
Unfortunately this type of neglect is all too common in Florida nursing homes. The Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration will investigate the matter. This is the agency that is responsible for licensing nursing homes. As of the date of this writing, it appears that this type of neglect was possibly predictable. The quality of care rating for Ridgecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is 2 stars out of 5 on the state agency guide and had an overall rating by Medicare of 1 star out of 5. This places Ridgecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in a very low ranking in comparison to other nursing homes. Thus, a thorough investigation of the nursing home is certainly warranted by both the police and the Agency for Healthcare Administration. In fact, the Agency for Healthcare Administration at its last inspection found a substantial number of deficiencies in care that although not identified as actually having produced actual harm at the time, had potential for more than minimal harm. Among other things, Ridgecrest was cited for deficiencies relating to developing comprehensive care plans, doing a comprehensive assessment of its patients and meeting professional standards.
