The AGENCY FOR HEALTHCARE ADMINISTRATION in Florida is responsible for regulating and licensing nursing homes. The Agency is also responsible for conducting an annual inspection of each nursing home to determine whether the nursing home is in compliance with regulations and is providing good quality care. Unfortunately, some nursing homes become aware of an approximate time when the inspection is going to be conducted and make special arrangements to be prepared. The problem is that the nursing home does not make these special arrangements throughout the year. For example, some of the nursing homes will cancel leave for its employees and will hire additional employees for a short period of time. Staffing is probably the most important indicator of whether or not the nursing home can provide good quality care. If there is insufficient staff, the nursing home is likely to be able to only provide a short period of time for caring for each patient.
When the AGENCY FOR HEALTHCAR ADMINSTRATION does its inspection, one of the questions it must answer is whether or not the nursing home is out of compliance sufficiently to be placed on a special watch list. This means the Agency is sufficiently alarmed about the quality of care and the nursing home could be told to stop operations and transfer its residents to other nursing homes.
Although this is rare, the Agency does publish a list of nursing homes on its watch list and that list is available on the internet. The official terminology for the AGENCY FOR HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION watch list is that the, “Facility did not meet, or correct upon follow up, minimum standards at the time of an inspection.” “Immediate action is taken if a facility poses a threat to resident health or safety.” As of the date of this writing, the watch list included a Daytona Beach nursing home, Coastal Health and Rehabilitation on Clyde Morris Blvd. The nursing home guide rated this nursing home with one star out of five for quality of care, pressure ulcers, decline and dignity. A nursing home could also be included on the watch list because it is “Operating under bankruptcy protection or met the criteria for conditional status during the past 30 months.”
At any rate, it is important to know whether or not a nursing home you are considering or are a resident in, is on the watch list.
